Chapter 15

Beau

There is something different about tonight’s performance. I am carefree and high on life. After the performance, I find myself indulging more liberally than I should in the great amount of alcohol that circulates around the room in plenteous supply. Even Benji, who is usually the watchdog, is more carefree and relaxed, after tonight’s performance.

“There is something I must do,” I say aloud to no one in particular.

“What did you say, man?” Kendrick says in a loud voice to make himself heard over the music.

“Hell, I don’t know,” I reply in a slurred voice.

Kendrick roars with laughter from my response. I join in with a chuckle or two of my own. “Let’s drink to that,” Kendrick picks up one of the many shot glasses lined up at our private table.

I pick up a shot glass and clink it against Kendrick’s glass, then swallow the contents in one gulp. This last shot has taken me over my limit. I really need to get out of here to my suite and sleep this shit off. I attempt to stand but fall back in my seat.

“Damn Beau, when did you become such a lightweight? Look at the old married man, he can’t hang anymore,” Laney teases.

“I think you may have a point. That’s why I’m getting out of here and letting you young folks have it.” Even though Laney is older than me by a few years, I tease her back.

“Do you need help getting to your suite?” Benji asks.

“Nah, I’ll be fine,” I say in confidence. “I’ll see you all later and don’t forget, we have a photo shoot for Time Out Magazine in about nine hours,” I inform them.

“We won’t forget,” they chorused.

I walk to the bank of elevators. I take the one which is marked private. I use my passkey to open the elevator doors. A sweet, fruity smell impales my nostrils and immediately I look behind me; Courtney Nicks is standing there. We haven’t said too much to each other all night but now here she is.

“You’re on your way up to your suite, Beau?” she asks.

“Yeah…where did you come from? I’ve hardly seen you all night.”

“I’ve been around,” she says and then hesitates before she adds, “Look, there is something important I need to talk with you about. Can we talk?”

“Court, can this wait ‘til later. I really want to get up to my suite.”

“This won’t take long, Beau. I promise you,” she says with a pleading look.

I don’t say anything, but I step back and motion for her to proceed me onto my private elevator. We ride up to my suite in silence. The elevator opens up into a spacious, luxurious floor plan. The scenery from the top-level window is breathtaking. It has a quaint view of the night’s lights that alight the city, which leaves one with a majestic view.

In all of its awe and inspiring beauty, all I can think of is falling into my bed to sleep off the effects of my overindulgence of alcoholic beverages tonight.
